Job Description
Position Description: Associate Director of Advocacy The Associate Director of Advocacy is responsible for a wide range of activities related to federal and state advocacy efforts with particular emphasis on federal issues. Responsibilities • Track all federal tobacco-related legislation. • Draft letters to Congressional offices and prepare background materials and talking points for advocates. • Lobby Congressional offices on a range of tobacco-related issues. • Analyze legislation, including writing summaries and section-by-section descriptions of bills. • Write monthly newsletter on tobacco issues for House and Senate offices. • Work with Grassroots Department to coordinate grassroots work on federal issues including editing action alerts sent to an electronic list of tobacco control advocates. • With Manager for Youth Advocacy, coordinate all advocacy efforts of a small group of youth advocates around the country, including coordinating Hill visits and other advocacy efforts in states and districts. • Respond to Congressional staff requests for information and background on issues and legislation. • Write periodic summaries of federal activity on tobacco issues for national and state advocacy organizations. • Manage legislative database including keeping the database up to date and completing reports as needed. • Compile annual report on state tobacco settlement spending, including tracking relevant legislation, in conjunction with state and communication team members. • Act as liaison to Communications Department to ensure federal sections of web site are up to date. • Manage Advocacy Department interns. • Provide other assistance to federal and state teams as needed. Skills & Requirements: • Bachelor's Degree. • Legislative or issue advocacy experience. • Excellent writing and project management skills. • Ability to coordinate several projects at one time. • Ability to work independently with only general supervision. • Team player attitude. • Strong computer skills a must. • Commitment to tobacco control issues.
