Responsibilities
The RAD will be responsible for providing hands-on strategic and tactical advice to state
tobacco control coalitions on legislative issues in the states in the Northeastern region of
the United States. He/she will interact directly with state coalitions and must be available
to travel widely and at short notice.
Assistance to state coalitions will encompass the entire range of advocacy activities,
including bill drafting, lobbying, media and grassroots development. In addition, the
RAD will make recommendations to the Campaign headquarters on potential funding of
state initiatives.
The Advocacy Department’s work is integrated with the Campaign’s Constituency
Relations, Communications and Research Departments. The state issues team is
supported by these departments and interacts with them.
Good communication is essential. This includes frequent contact with the Vice President,
State Issues and other members of the Advocacy Department, weekly conference calls
and status reports, and occasional meetings in the Washington, D.C. office.
Requirements
The ideal candidate has extensive knowledge of the workings of the state legislative and
political process, and has experience in working with broad-based, diverse coalitions.
Previous experience in tobacco control will be a plus, but is not required.
In addition, he/she must be able to work independently, but also as part of a team that
includes other RADs and the headquarters operation in Washington, D.C.
Finally, he/she must have a passion for the issue of tobacco control.
