Job Description
POSITION TITLE: Director, Communications and Marketing, Archon X PRIZE for Genomics RESPONSIBLE TO: Prize Lead, Archon X PRIZE for Genomics (dotted line VP, Communications) LOCATION: Santa Monica, CA By creating the first private race to space, the X PRIZE Foundation (XPF) gave birth to a new industry with extraordinary technological, commercial and social benefits. As a result, the XPF is now widely recognized as the premier prize institute, bringing about radical breakthroughs for the benefit of humanity through public competitions. Rather than rewarding past achievements, the XPF spurs innovation and entrepreneurship, bringing new minds and new money to solve intractable problems. In the fall of 2006, a new prize was launched on the anniversary of the Ansari X PRIZE in the area of life sciences. The $10 million Archon X PRIZE for Genomics will help to bring about the era of individualized medicine by increasing the speed and lowering the cost of decoding human genomes. In addition, we are currently creating new X PRIZESó10 in the next five yearsóin life sciences, energy/environment, entrepreneurship and education. The X PRIZE Foundation is a designated educational non-profit. PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES This key position requires true vision, creativity and an ìaim highî attitude. The proven leader of our marketing and communications efforts must possess a mastery of traditional methods, the courage to truly innovate, and the wisdom to strike a successful balance between the two. The Communications and Marketing Director will be responsible for coordinating media relations and marketing strategy for the X PRIZE Foundationís Archon X PRIZE for Genomics prize team. The position reports to the Prize Lead of the Archon X PRIZE for Genomics with a dotted line to the VP, Communications for the X PRIZE Foundation. We seek a well organized communications professional who is reliable and self motivated with strong project management skills. This individual will be required to keep various constituencies, both internal and external, constantly apprised of Prize Team developments, progress and milestones. Working within a team environment, day-to-day responsibilities will include (but not be limited to): • Creating and executing communication and marketing strategies, with the assistance of the VP, Communications and VP, Marketing, to various niche scientific and medical audiences as well as the general public. • Support the Director of Sponsorship on partner acquisition efforts and coordinate with the Marketing & Partnership Department to fulfill all sponsor obligations on behalf of the Prize and Foundation. • Creating media angles and campaigns to highlight the Prize and all teams competing for the Prize. • Work with the X PRIZE Foundation marketing and PR department to maintain overall foundation brand consistency and recognition. • Developing comprehensive marketing campaign for our Genome 100 program: o We are lining up 100 well known individuals whose genomes will be sequenced and who will use their ëvoiceí to support our effort. o Most of these individuals are major figures from entertainment, politics, and business, many of whom have been afflicted by disease and/or represent certain disease groups. o Current, publicly known, members of our Genome 100 include, Stephen Hawking, Larry Page, Paul Allen, Larry King, and many more. • Developing detailed media strategies (online, print and television) for Genome 100 and other innovative programs for the Archon Genomics X PRIZE. • Assisting in development of marketing/PR materials such as: press releases, press kits, PowerPoint presentations, newsletters, donor correspondence, bylined articles and talking points. • Proofreading, writing, editing and visual sensibility for all Prize materials. • Coordinating media relations activities such as journalist requests, interviews with Prize staff and competing teams. • Working with the VP, Marketing to create content for the Archon X PRIZE for Genomics website. • Maintain database of reporters and organize an article archive system for Prize Team. • Create and maintain communications/marketing calendar of goals, activities and milestones for Prize Team and Foundation executives. • Support the creation, sponsorship, development and marketing of annual events and media event coordination (conferences, press conferences, etc) as needed. • Monitor and oversee media relations and marketing vendors (project objectives, budgets) and report to Prize Lead and VP, Communications. • Travel anticipated (approx. 15%) QUALIFICATIONS The successful candidate will be a persuasive, values-driven individual with the demonstrated ability to work effectively with all levels of management and staff, as well as all external resources. This person must have the highest level of integrity and be able to integrate with our exceptional team in a very fast paced and complex environment. A collaborative, approachable leadership style with a highly ethical, hands-on approach to business. Flexibility and ability to work with ambiguity is important.
