Job Description
PAID INTERNSHIP: General Communications COMMUNICATIONS DEPARTMENT ACCION International ACCION International is a private, nonprofit organization with the mission of giving people the financial tools they need―microenterprise loans, business training and other financial services―to work their way out of poverty. A world pioneer in microfinance, ACCION was founded in 1961 and issued its first microloan in 1973 in Brazil. ACCION International’s partner microfinance institutions today are providing loans as low as $100 to poor men and women entrepreneurs in 25 countries in Latin America, the Caribbean, Asia and sub-Saharan Africa, and in the U.S. In the last decade alone, ACCION partners have disbursed more than 17.9 million loans totaling more than $12.3 billion; 97 percent of the loans have been repaid. Selected for the fourth consecutive year for its pioneering approaches to poverty alleviation, ACCION was among 43 organizations awarded the 2007 Social Capitalist Award by Fast Company magazine. ACCION has also been awarded Charity Navigator’s highest rating―four stars―for efficiency and sound fiscal management. Position summary: Communications Intern needed to assist members of the Communications team. Work will include the maintenance of social networking web sites, supporting the web master in maintaining and updating the ACCION website(s), and assisting in managing the ACCION online community. Other tasks may include gathering information pertinent to ACCION and the microfinance industry, as well as general administrative support for the Communications Department. This is a great opportunity to learn about microenterprise development, e-marketing, web site maintenance, and general communications in a friendly, professional, multicultural environment. Hours per week: Flexible, 4-5 days/week preferred Start date: September-December with possible extension into 2008 Skills and Experience · Experience with and keen interest in web 2.0 tools and online networking · Interest in writing, marketing and public relations · Interest in international development, microfinance a plus · Excellent verbal, writing and organizational skills · Computer literacy – PC skills, MS Word, Excel · Recent college graduate preferred (due to hours needed) · Advanced Spanish desired Responsibilities:* · Maintain ACCION’s social networking web sites · Conduct web site updates and maintenance · Conduct industry research for internal and external communications purposes · Assist in production of materials and newsletter (print and electronic) as needed · Assist in compiling reports on ACCION website traffic · Other administrative help as needed *The tasks undertaken by the Communications Team tend to change depending on internal communications and media relations opportunities that arise. Thus, this list of tasks is intended as a general guideline and the ideal candidate will be flexible in taking on a variety of tasks as needed.
