Job Description
CHIEF OPERATING OFFICER (COO) American Humane Association is seeking an accomplished non-profit senior manager to serve as Chief Operating Officer (COO) to lead efforts to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of American Humane’s operations. The successful candidate will have proven professional standards of reliability, performance, and demeanor, with the vision and experience to spearhead American Humane’s operations. The organization is particularly interested in a candidate who, while recognizing the full extent of the challenges that American Humane and other non-profits face, understands and believes in the organization’s potential. ROLE AND AUTHORITY The COO reports directly to the President & CEO and will oversee the day-to-day operations at all locations in support of the mission and vision of American Humane. The COO has responsibility for planning, directing, and coordinating the development, selection, implementation, and utilization of American Humane’s operations. The COO will work with all levels of staff to identify and address individual, departmental, and organization-wide needs and opportunities. POSITION QUALIFICATIONS Below is a brief listing of essential requirements that are important in identifying the right person to help lead American Humane forward. Knowledge of: * Principles and practices of non-profit business and administration. * Organization and functions of non-profit management, current trends, and recent developments in finance, budgeting, and administration. * Management techniques and effective employee supervision. Ability to: * Plan, organize, and manage American Humane’s operations and provide program support. * Foster a success-oriented, accountable environment within the organization. * Direct the functions which support American Humane’s programs and projects. * Assume a leadership role at American Humane in the absence of the President & CEO. * Exercise sound judgment, taking into account a broad range of input and advice. * Manage and provide organizational leadership in conjunction with the Senior Management Team. * Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing, including the ability to make clear and concise presentations. * Interact effectively with staff, business partners, and the public. * Develop and implement effective organizational policies and procedures, as well as operational goals and objectives. * Establish priorities and direct the allocation of staffing resources. * Evaluate the organization’s operational structure, including data management, and develop training and education for continual improvement of the efficiency and effectiveness of the group, as well as providing individuals with professional and personal growth with an emphasis on opportunities (where possible) of individuals. * Pay attention to detail and enjoy supervising and maintaining effective working relationships amongst employees, senior managers, and outside organizations. * In coordination with the CFO, oversee the development of the organization’s annual budget in collaboration with the Senior Management Team. Monitors monthly expenditures and performance against budget. * In coordination with the CFO, develop, recommend, and prepare specifications for capital expenditures, projects, and proposals as requested by the President & CEO. * Manage special projects as assigned by the President & CEO. * Maintain professional growth and development through seminars, workshops, and other resources. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS Education: * A Bachelor’s degree in Business, Management, Non-Profit Management, Law, Public Administration, or related field. Experience: * Ten to fifteen years of experience in the management or supervision of a national non-profit organization. Prior successful experience as a COO in a for-profit business will also be considered. * Compensation for the position is negotiable.
