Media Relations Associate
ACLU Communications Department [COMM-19]
The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), a national not-for-profit public interest organization devoted to the defense of the Bill of Rights, invites applications for the full-time position of Media Relations Associate to work in its Communications Department.
OVERVIEW:
New York City and the legislative office in Washington, DC. The ideal candidate for this position is an individual with a fine-tuned sense of "what sells" in the news business and is comfortable working with reporters affiliated with major broadcast news outlets. We are seeking a candidate who thrives in a fast-paced environment, pursues a strategic approach to promoting issues and is comfortable advising prominent civil liberties experts about how to work with the media.
ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The media relations associate's responsibilities will include:
* Cultivating relationships with reporters, editors, producers and other media professionals;
* Coordinating the logistics of an in-house television studio;
* Developing a strategy for maximizing use of in-house television studio;
* Preparing news releases, op-eds, letters to the editor and other press materials;
* Developing media plans with an emphasis on broadcast media, pitching stories, and preparing fact sheets;
* Working with the ACLU's Legal Department to publicize its work. The Legal Department includes special litigation projects on immigrants' rights, lesbian and gay rights, racial justice, drug policy, reproductive freedom and women's rights; will also work with the D.C Legislative office and state base affiliates
* Reviewing and editing press releases submitted by affiliates for posting on the website; and,
* Providing affiliates with advice on media outreach and placement with a concentration on broadcast outlets.
SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS:
* BA/BS in Media Relations/Communications field and minimum of three years public relations or broadcast media experience;
* Experience with broadcast journalism; video editing and production preferred
* Experience pitching stories to major news outlets;
* Strong writing and editing skills; ability to produce clear, concise talking points, press releases and other materials on tight deadlines;
* Experience using the media to promote civil liberties or social justice issues;
* Demonstrated interest in civil liberties or civil rights preferred.
